I thought it was time I popped in and said hello myself! 👋 I’m Angela, the founder of TBIC, and yes… I also live with a brain injury. Which means I’m not just talking about the challenges — I’m living them too!

I know how hard it can be. The fatigue, the overwhelm, the memory problems, the things that used to be easy but suddenly aren’t… and all the little unexpected challenges that come with brain injury. I’ve become pretty good at hiding some of mine over the years — I think! 😂 Although if you’ve ever watched me walk into a room and immediately forget why I’m there, you’ll know the truth!

The past five years have certainly been an adventure. We’ve had volunteers come and go, lots of changes, plenty of learning, and yes… a few hiccups along the way. But with the amazing support of my support team, our wonderful volunteers and our Board, I’m still here, still working away and still incredibly passionate about what TBIC can do.

TBIC was created because social isolation is such a huge part of life after brain injury. It can feel like the world has moved on while you’re trying to figure out your new world. We wanted to create somewhere people could come along, be themselves, have a laugh, make friends and — perhaps most importantly — know that they have a voice and they are not alone.

Something really special happens at our events. Our members connect over the causes of their brain injuries, but also over the things that often aren’t talked about enough — the everyday symptoms, frustrations, funny moments and challenges that other people might not understand. There’s something pretty wonderful about seeing someone’s shoulders relax because they’ve found people who get it. 💛

And then there are the smiles, the laughter, the friendships and the acceptance. Sometimes it’s a coffee, sometimes a picnic, sometimes a good old-fashioned chat — but those simple moments can mean so much. We also love seeing families and loved ones come along. Knowing that they can meet others who understand and see their loved one connecting, laughing and enjoying themselves can bring a little peace of mind too.

Are we perfect? Absolutely not! 😂 We’re a bunch of volunteers doing our best, learning as we go and trying to make things better all the time. And sometimes I forget what I’ve learnt… which is rather ironic for someone running a brain injury charity! 🤣

But here we are — five years in and still going! 🐝💛

I’m incredibly proud of what TBIC has become, and even more excited about where we’re heading. There is still so much we want to do, more people to reach, more friendships to create and more support to provide.

So, if you’re living with brain injury, or you’re a family member or loved one, come and join us. You don’t have to have all the answers, you don’t have to explain yourself, and you certainly don’t have to pretend everything is okay.

Just come as you are. We’ll figure the rest out together. 💛
